Plat en bois laqué selon la technique pratiqué à Patzcuaro dans l’état de Michoacan
procédé précolombien consistant à presser les graines du fruit chia et à les mélanger
avec des pigments naturels. Les Bateas étaient considérées comme des objets de
curiosité en Espagne, ainsi les ateliers de Patzcuaro avaient une grande production au
XVIIIe siècle et se laissaient influencer par les laques japonaises Namban
débarquées des galions à Acapulco
Avec ses élégants motifs d’oiseaux et de tiges fleuries, cette batea
est tout à fait représentative de ces objets d’art coloniaux métisses appréciés des
collectionneurs d’antan

Tray in sculpted wood, lacquered according to the technique practiced in Patzcuaro
in the state of Michoacan: a pre-Columbian process whereby
chia fruit seeds were pressed and mixed with natural pigments
Bateas were regarded as curios in Spain, therefore the
Patzcuaro workshops were very active in the 18th century and were also in uenced by
the Japanese Namban lacquers imported on galleons at Acapulco
With its elegant patterns of birds and foliage, this batea is typical of those
colonial objets d’art of mixed origins which were much appreciated by yesteryear’s collectors
